As a marketer myself, I was super excited to interview crypto marketer (turned friend), Jean.

She gives us a peek into her career before and after crypto, the differences between the two industries, and much more.

For jobseekers looking at the crypto space, she also shares valuable tips to consider making a career switch.

Introducing Jean, a Singapore-based crypto marketer.

Tell us about what you do in your job!

I'm transitioning into a new crypto job currently!

Previously, I was the Marketing Lead for an NFT marketplace for independent artists on Avalanche. Before that, I was doing marketing for a crypto exchange startup.

As the teams in these companies were lean, I had to wear multiple hats as the sole Marketer:

This included managing social media accounts, creating written and social content, email marketing and partnerships.

How did you get started with crypto? What drew you into crypto?

I first heard about crypto a few years ago when DeFi yield farming was a thing with PancakeSwap, SushiSwap, etc.

But I only started diving into crypto after getting intrigued by the Dogecoin hype last year - I was wondering how can someone become a millionaire by investing only a few hundred dollars.

I then signed up for a few exchange accounts, created a wallet, and went straight into buying a few coins.

How was your career like before crypto? What made you decide to jump into a career in crypto?

Since graduation, I have been in marketing roles, mainly doing campaign planning and social media management.

After I got into crypto, I've seen how passionate and enthusiastic people were in building their projects or supporting projects they believed in. That's when I realised that this was a space that I really wanted to be in.

After I discovered crypto, I thought that it'd be cool if I can combine both my interests and expertise together.

How different is your work in crypto vs your previous career?

In crypto, I spend a lot of time online - especially on Twitter and Discord. Through this, I get to meet a lot of different people in Web3 and understand their journeys in this space.

Crypto news also moves a lot faster than other industries, so I always have to keep abreast of the latest crypto news all the time.

People in crypto are from all over the world, so it can be a little challenging to have calls at odd hours.

What do you enjoy most about NFTs?

Other than the artwork (I do love NFT artwork), I really enjoy being in NFT communities.

People whom I've met in Web3 have been super helpful, which is the beauty of a community in Web3. This is something that I've not experienced in Web2.

I also enjoy learning about new NFT projects or protocols with my friends.

What advice would you give to someone considering making a career switch into crypto?

You need to first have enthusiasm and the right attitude. There are many components of crypto and you're constantly learning everyday, thus the right attitude to learn and being crypto-curious are really important - we can sense it in someone haha.

Also, being active on Twitter and attending real life events can help you to get more insights about the industry and expand your network.

To gain some experience for your portfolio, there are also many ways to contribute (paid and unpaid) in NFT projects, DAOs and DeFi protocols.

What are some of your most memorable moments (good and bad) during your crypto career?

My personal bad moments would be getting rug-pulled by protocols or NFT projects and trading losses. (Nobody likes making losses, right?)

Also, during the whole UST/LUNA saga period where I saw so many people were affected by it.

Memorable good moments would be making new friends in crypto (Hi Daryl!) and discovering so many talented people who are building in this space.
